The Mobile Unit (MU): What Makes it Unique?

mobile-unit The My Bariatric Solutions mobile unit was put into service September 2011 primarily to provide follow-up care for lap band patients. As the number of patients undergoing gastric sleeve and gastric bypass grew so did the services provided by the mobile unit. With the addition of a Nurse Practitioner the mobile unit evolved into what it is today. Currently the mobile unit is an invaluable tool utilized to provide pre-op and post-op care for the full range of bariatric patients (gastric sleeve, bypass, lap-band, and balloon). See More..

Tips for Adjusting to New Portion Sizes

almonds Before undergoing bariatric surgery, small portion sizes are discussed and visual examples are provided. At that time, most people think “wow, that can’t be real. That’s all I will be able to eat at a time?” It isn’t until AFTER surgery, when you actually have restriction, that adjusting to your new portion sizes becomes real life. This is a learning curve for most, as your entire life you have been eating the same way. Adjusting to your new “meal” size can be a challenge, but remember your bariatric procedure is a tool to a healthier you! The tips below can help get you started!
  • Stop eating when you feel full. This can be a little difficult, as your portion sizes have decreased significantly from what they used to be. If you do overeat, you could experience nausea, vomiting, or difficulty swallowing.
  • Switch to small plates and utensils. If you continue to eat your meals off of a normal sized plate, you mentally will not feel like you are satisfied after eating. Using small plates and utensils can help you to feel like you are eating a fulfilling amount of food, while also helping you to take small bites.
  • Make sure you have measuring cups and a food scale. Having a measuring cup can help you to portion out ¼ cup meals to help you avoid overeating. Remember though, that is just a reference point. If you can only take 3-4 bites, that is normal. Having a food scale can be helpful in weighing your cooked proteins, so that you can accurately gauge your protein intake.
  • Eat SLOW. Even though you are only able to eat a small amount, it is important to eat slowly. Take 20 minutes to eat a meal. Setting a timer can be very helpful.
  • Share a meal when dining out. After surgery, you will not be able to eat a normal restaurant size meal. Remember, you will only be able to eat a few bites, so sharing a meal with a friend can help you to avoid not only overeating, but also save you money!

Produce of the Month: Peaches

peaches Did you know peaches were once given as gifts to begin new friendships – thus the origination of the saying, “you are a peach”. Peaches are in season this time of year (taste the best and are the best price). Have you purchased any yet?! Don’t forget to also check out the Parker County Annual Peach Festival this July. Peaches are packed with antioxidants and other vitamins and minerals, specifically vitamin A (which is good for your skin and vision health) and vitamin C (important for immune support). See below for a tasty recipe using peaches.

Recipe of the Month: Grilled Fruit Skewers with Yogurt

yogurtIngredients: 4 cups of chopped fruit (peaches, pineapple, and nectarines) Cinnamon Glaze: 2 T. Truvia Nectar 1/4 tsp. ground cinnamon   Yogurt Dip: 1-5.3 oz. fat-free Greek vanilla yogurt 1 T. Truvia Nectar 1/4 tsp. ground cinnamon 1/8 tsp. vanilla extract 1/8 tsp. cinnamon 3/4 tsp. Truvia Baking Blend (or other sweetener) wooden skewers Instructions:
  1. Soak skewers in water and preheat grill to medium-high.
  2. In a small bowl, mix together Truvia Nectar and cinnamon. Thread fruit onto soaked skewers and brush the fruit with cinnamon glaze. Place on preheated grill and close lid.
  3. Meanwhile, mix together ingredients for the yogurt dip.
  4. Turn skewers after about 5 minutes and let cook on the other side for a few extra minutes until softened.
  5. Take skewers off grill and let cool for a few minutes and then serve immediately with yogurt dip. Enjoy!Recipe…
