Stress and Health in the Fall Season

The fall season can be stressful after a nice leisurely summer.  Kids are back in school, the traffic to and from work is heavier, days become shorter, and the holidays are just around the corner.  Seems everything gets back into full force!

The symptoms of stress can be both mental and physical, so it is important to know the signs. Stress can create not only mental anguish exhibited by short tempers and angry outbursts, but also can increase digestive problems such as upset stomach, heartburn, constipation and acid reflux, which can lead to more serious conditions if not addressed.  Other symptoms of stress can be headache, fatigue, over or under eating, depression and lack of sleep. High levels of stress, regardless of which form it takes, makes you more susceptible to illness by reducing your immunity. Taking care of yourself during stressful times is important to your quality of life.

Tips on how to de-stress:

    Regular physical activity

Eat a healthy, well balanced diet (ask your dietitian for ideas and support)

    Meal prep

Plan and organize with a calendar and make lists

Have a night out with friends

Read a book/have quiet time alone (even 5 minutes can make a difference)

Have a routine/schedule to your day and go to bed at the same time each night

Get plenty of rest (7-8 hours a night)

Declutter areas you work and living spaces

Strive to maintain a good support system through family, friends, and co-workers.  Do not hesitate to reach out when feeling overwhelmed and need to vent or talk to someone.
