Gastric Sleeve Surgery

My Bariatric Solutions provides sleeve gastrectomy, or gastric sleeve surgery, for patients in the Dallas/Ft. Worth metroplex and surrounding North Texas communities as well as Southern Oklahoma.

Gastric sleeve surgery is unique in that it facilitates weight loss by permanently reducing the size of the stomach. It does not require gastric bypass or insertion of a gastric band like other bariatric surgery options. Dr. Arsalla and Dr. Heath Smith are experienced in performing sleeve gastrectomy and have helped many patients achieve significant weight loss with this procedure.

If you would like further information on how you, too, may benefit from sleeve gastrectomy, we welcome you to schedule a consultation with one of our Bariatric Surgeons. Schedule online today!

What is Gastric Sleeve Surgery?

Gastric sleeve surgery, also known as Gastric Sleeve Resection or Sleeve Gastrectomy, is one of the restrictive procedures our North Texas team provides. The procedure uses stomach stapling to create a gastric “sleeve.” The stomach is stapled vertically into two sections: one section on the left (the “sleeve”) and another on the right. The stomach’s natural connection to the small intestine is at the bottom of the sleeve; in gastric sleeve surgery, this connection is left intact. Meanwhile, the left-hand portion of the stomach is removed. The procedure therefore reduces the stomach’s capacity while leaving the intestines intact.

Benefits of Gastric Sleeve Surgery

Gastric sleeve surgery does not bypass any part of the stomach or small intestine, and the digestive system is allowed to function normally. Therefore, patients tend to experience fewer nutritional deficiencies and can eat a wider variety of food than with Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery. The opening connection between the stomach and small intestine remains intact, which reduces symptoms of “dumping syndrome.” Sleeve gastrectomy can be used to lower a high-BMI patient’s weight in preparation for gastric bypass or LAP-BAND® System surgery. For low-BMI patients, sleeve gastrectomy can facilitate greater weight loss than LAP-BAND® System surgery, and it does not require adjustments of a gastric band.

Risks of Gastric Sleeve Surgery

As with any surgical procedure, gastric sleeve surgery involves risks. The procedure is irreversible and can cause complications in a small percentage of patients. Possible risks include breakdown of the staple line and leakage of gastrointestinal juices into the abdomen. Patients must be prepared for life after weight loss surgery, which requires adherence to dietary and lifestyle guidelines.

If you are a suitable candidate for obesity surgery, your best option may be gastric sleeve surgery.
