The holiday season is all about celebrating traditions, spending time with family and friends, and indulging—in moderation. With seasonal parties, family obligations, and friendly gatherings in full swing, you may find it difficult to stick with the healthy eating and exercise habits you developed following bariatric surgery, especially with many festive events centered on eating and drinking. However, with a little extra planning and strategy, you can continue to see your desired weight loss or weight management throughout the holiday season. Use these tips to help you stay on track with your weight loss goals.
Portion control is paramount. It’s easy to fill your plate with a spoonful of this and a forkful of that and before you know it, you have a platter of food. Eating off of a small appetizer plate forces you to control your portion sizes and only choose the foods you really want to eat. Make sure you always include a protein option to help keep you full throughout the event. After you get a plate of food, MOVE AWAY from the serving table to avoid repeatedly refilling your plate.
Never go to a party or gathering on an empty stomach. Before heading to holiday events, make sure to have a high protein snack to help control your hunger. Quick protein snacks like beef jerky, cheese or nuts can really help to keep you full. If you arrive to the event famished, you are more likely to graze throughout the party and overeat on the high calorie treats being served.
Limit alcohol consumption. Holiday gatherings usually have many high calorie, high sugar beverages. Have one drink and then spend the rest of the evening sipping on sugar-free drinks to avoid overconsumption of high calorie beverages. Remember that proper hydration can also help to keep you satisfied. Keeping your mind on fluids will help keep you full, making you less likely to graze.
Get moving. With all of the extra events and gatherings, the holidays can really become a stressful time, and you may feel that you have to sacrifice some of your regular routine to get everything done. Don’t let exercise be your sacrifice! Try to stick to your regular exercise routine throughout the holiday season. If you don’t have a regular exercise routine, use the holidays to go on walks with family after meals or window shop around the mall with your friends. Any exercise will help to keep your weight loss goals on track.
Keep yourself a priority. You have made excellent strides towards a healthy life on your weight loss journey. Believe that you can enjoy the holiday season without feeling deprived, overindulging, or gaining weight. Practice moderation and continue to focus on the healthy eating and exercise habits you have instilled in your daily life throughout the holiday season.
